Ontario Unregulated Operator Transition Period Concludes
This cutoff was designed to give operators time to request permits, which would enable them to operate in the regulated market, and to give unlicensed operators time to leave the market.
From this point forward, the AGCO can take legal action against operators who are still running without a permit in the market.
The regulation came into force earlier this month when the AGCO updated its standards for online gambling for registrants. At the time, the AGCO mentioned that it would also provide a notification period to assist those operators who were further transitioning to the regulated market.
The updates made the most significant change to standard 1.22, which was altered to set the transition period deadline as October 31.
Today also marks the implementation of many other standards – including standard 4.09, which requires gambling systems to be installed and maintained in a way that ensures user safety and security.
Furthermore, standard 4.35 – which restricts access to live dealer games to anyone with a business need – also took effect today.
This represents a significant development for Ontario’s recently launched online gambling sector, which commenced operations on April 4th.
