Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) has formally debuted in the Indiana gambling market with the grand unveiling of the $290 million Terre Haute Casino Resort. The sprawling 400,000-square-foot complex features 1,000 slot machines, 36 gaming tables, and a designated sports wagering area. Dining and beverage choices abound, including a steakhouse, a barbecue eatery, a quick-service deli, a main bar, and a high-roller bar. CDI’s Chief Executive Officer, Bill Carstanjen, conveyed his excitement, noting that the launch represents a major turning point in Churchill Downs’ dedication to the local area. He stressed that although the path has been challenging, this is merely the start of the beneficial influence the endeavor will have on Vigo County and Indiana. The remaining facilities, encompassing an upscale 122-room hotel, a rooftop lounge, and a coffee shop, are slated to commence operations on May 15, 2024.
The development of the Terre Haute Casino Resort generated nearly 1,000 construction positions, a significant boost to the regional economy. Upon opening, the establishment anticipates hiring approximately 550 individuals in both full-time and part-time roles, further bolstering the area’s expansion. The building process, overseen by Williams Building Company, commenced in June 2022.
In separate Kentucky equine racing developments, Churchill Downs Incorporated joined forces with SAP America in February 2024. This agreement designates SAP as the official collaborator for Churchill Downs Racetrack, the Kentucky Derby, and the Kentucky Oaks. Moreover, CDI revealed a $200 million modernization initiative at Churchill Downs, encompassing an opulent dining venue called the “SI Club” with views of a redesigned paddock and Paddock Run. Previously known as the “1895 Club,” the updated area will be prepared for the 150th Kentucky Derby.
