Internet service providers in Australia will soon be compelled to restrict access to a pair of international lottery platforms. This mandate originates from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), the nation’s media regulator.
The two platforms, “Ai Lottery” and “Red Fox Lottery,” are the initial lottery sites to be subject to an ACMA blocking directive. The ACMA inquiry disclosed that both sites were predominantly providing overseas lottery offerings to Australians without appropriate licensing, a breach of the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001.
“These platforms are functioning unlawfully in Australia, signifying that individuals who opt to utilize them possess zero consumer safeguards whatsoever,” stated ACMA representative Fiona Cameron.
“Restricting illicit offshore websites assists in shielding Australians from potentially dubious providers, where there is minimal to no recourse if issues arise. Lottery offerings licensed and operating legitimately in Australia have significant protections in place to guarantee fairness and to safeguard consumers.”
Although these are the first lottery offerings to be blocked, the ACMA has been mandating internet providers to block unlawful casino-type gaming websites since November 2019. A recent analysis indicates that in the 2020/21 fiscal year, the ACMA undertook website blocking measures against 55 offerings, leading to a decrease of at least 90% in Australian users for the majority of offerings.
“We are highly satisfied with these outcomes, which demonstrate our efforts to disrupt illicit online wagering in Australia are generating a favorable effect,” Ms. Cameron added.
